Excel does not open when double-clicking an Excel file

Problem

Under certain circumstances, an Excel setting gets switched on which prevents Excel from receiving commands from other applications. This also affects opening files on double-click.

Solution

  1. Open Excel from the Windows Start menu
  2. Open the Excel options: File → Options
  3. Go to Advanced > General
  4. Make sure that Ignore other applications that use Dynamic Data Exchange (DDE) is not checked.
